Zhytomyr Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater
Zhytomyr Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater [Житомирський академічний український музично-драматичний театр ім. І. Кочерги; Zhytomyrskyi akademichnyi ukrainskyi muzychno-dramatychnyi teatr im. I. Kocherhy]. A theater established in Zhytomyr in 1944 as the Zhytomyr Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater. It is the main theater of the Zhytomyr oblast. In 1981 it was renamed in honor of dramatist Ivan Kocherha. In 2014 it was granted a national theater status and assumed its present name. Its repertoire consists of world classics—including William Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Honoré de Balzac’s La Marâtre—and Ukrainian (by Kocherha, Bohdan Lepky, Mykhailo Starytsky, Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko, and other dramatists) and international plays.
