Yushchyshyn, Ivan
Yushchyshyn, Ivan [Ющишин, Іван; Juščyšyn], b 18 November 1883 in Zaluzhia, Zbarazh county, Galicia, d 23 October 1960 in Lviv. Educator. While teaching in elementary schools in the villages of Zbarazh county, Galicia, he served as secretary of the Ukrainian Teachers' Mutual Aid Society in Lviv and chairman of its Pedagogical Research Commission as well as editor of the journal Uchytel’ (1911–14). During the First World War he was deported to Irkutsk by Russian authorities. In 1918 he directed the Department of Public Education in the Ministry of Education in Kyiv and edited Derzhavnyi vistnyk there. After the war he continued to teach in Zbarazh county, edited Uchytel’s’ke slovo for many years, and wrote articles on educational theory and methodology. During the Nazi occupation of Ukraine Yushchyshyn worked at the Ukrainian Teachers' Labor Alliance, a section of the Ukrainian Central Committee. He was arrested by the NKVD in 1947 and exiled to Siberia, from where he returned to Lviv in 1956.
