Wojnar, Meletius

Wojnar, Meletius [Войнар, Мелетій; Vojnar, Meletij], b 15 October 1911 in Bosko (Besko), Sianik county, Galicia, d 22 July 1988 in Glen Cove, New York State, USA. Basilian scholar; member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society from 1966. He studied at the Basilian Fatherstheological seminary and college and the Gregorian University in Rome (JCD, 1949). He was ordained in 1938, and became rector of Saint Josaphat's Ukrainian Pontifical College (1953–4) in Rome and a professor of Oriental canon law at the Catholic University of America (1954–74). He wrote several authoritative studies of the Basilian monastic order in Ukraine, including De Regimine Basilianorum Ruthenorum a metr. J. V. Rutskyj restauratorum (1949), De Capitulis Basilianorum (1954), Vasyliiany v ukraïns'kim narodi (The Basilians within the Ukrainian Nation, 1955), and De Protoarchimandrita Basilianorum (1617–1804) (1958), and articles on canon law in the Eastern church in Analecta Ordinis S. Basilii Magni/Zapysky ChSVV and elsewhere.
