Volnovakha

Volnovakha [Волноваха; Volnovaxa]. Map: DBIV-2. A city (2011 pop 23,442) and a raion center in Donetsk oblast. It originated in 1881 as a railroad settlement during the construction of the Olenivka–Mariupol branch line and developed into a major railway junction. In 1938 it was granted city status. Its main industry is railway transportation, which its metalworking industry and building-materials industry serve. On 22 May 2014 a major battle between the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the pro-Russian terrorists took place near Volnovakha.
