Tkachenko, Mykola

Tkachenko, Mykola [Ткаченко, Микола; Tkačenko], b 4 January 1893 in Talne, Cherkasy county, Kyiv gubernia, d 7 November 1965 in Kyiv. Historian and literary scholar. A graduate of Kyiv University (1916), he worked at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (from 1919) on the Historical-Geographical Commission and as head of the Archeographic Commission. He also worked at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and the Institute of Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and studied the socioeconomic history of 17th- and 18th-century Ukraine. He wrote Istoriia revoliutsiinoï borot'by u Kyievi v XIX ta na pochatku XX st. (A History of the Revolutionary Struggle in Kyiv in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries, 1930), Narysy z istoriï selian na Livoberezhnii Ukraïni v XVII–XVIII st. (Essays in the History of the Peasantry in Left-Bank Ukraine during the 17th–18th Centuries, 1931), and Litopys zhyttia i tvorchosti T.H. Shevchenka (A Chronicle of the Life and Works of T. Shevchenko, 1961); coauthored the collective work Istoriia Kyieva (History of Kyiv, 1959–60); and coedited the complete collection of Taras Shevchenko’s works (6 vols, 1963–4).
