Ten, Borys

Ten, Borys [Тен, Борис] (pseud of Mykola Khomychevsky), b 9 December 1897 in Derman, Zdolbuniv raion, Rivne oblast, d 13 March 1983 in Zhytomyr. Poet and translator. His first published work appeared in 1923. He wrote a collection of sonnets, Zoriani sady (Starry Orchards, 1970), but he is known primarily for his translations of classical texts, such as Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and the works of Aeschylus, Aristophanes, and Aristotle. He also translated works by William Shakespeare, Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, Adam Mickiewicz, Aleksandr Pushkin, and Leo Tolstoy. He was one of the leading translators of the middle and late 20th century, and he contributed greatly to the enrichment of Ukrainian cultural expression and the Ukrainian lexicon.
