Subtelny, Orest
Subtelny, Orest [Субтельний, Орест; Subtel’nyj], b 17 May 1941 in Cracow, d 24 July 2016 in Toronto, Canada. Ukrainian historian; member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society and foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine from 1992. Together with his parents he emigrated to the United States after the Second World War, where he graduated from the University of North Carolina (1967) and Harvard University (PH D, 1972). He taught at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York State (1975–82), and was a professor of Ukrainian history at York University in Toronto from 1982 to 2015. He was the author of The Mazepists: Ukrainian Separatism in the 18th Century (1981), Domination of Eastern Europe: Native Nobilities and Foreign Absolutism, 1500–1715 (1986), Ukraine: A History (1988; Ukrainian translation 1991), and Ukrainians in North America: An Illustrated History (1991). An expanded version of Subtelny and Arkadii Zhukovsky's article on the history of Ukraine in Encyclopedia of Ukraine (vol 2, 1988) was published in Ukrainian translation in Lviv as Narys istoriï Ukraïny (1991).
