Shyshatsky-Illich, Oleksander

Shyshatsky-Illich, Oleksander [Шишацький-Ілліч, Олександер; Šyšac'kyj-Illič], b 1828 in Krasylivka, Kozelets county, Chernihiv gubernia, d 2 March 1859 in Chernihiv. Poet and ethnographer. A graduate of the Chernihiv Theological Seminary (formerly Chernihiv College), he edited the Chernigovskie gubernskie vedomosti (1854–9), which printed much information about Ukrainian folklore and ethnography. His own works include a historical and ethnographic study of Olyshivka (1854), a collection of ‘Little Russian’ sayings and proverbs (1857), and a two-volume collection of poetry (1856–7).
