Shtets, Mykola
Shtets, Mykola [Штець, Микола; Štec'], b 16 March 1932 in Habura, Humenne county, Czechoslovakia, d 1 November 2019 in Prešov, Slovakia. Ukrainian linguist in the Prešov region. A graduate of Kyiv University (candidate’s dissertation, 1964), he taught Ukrainian phonetics and historical grammar in the department of Ukrainian language and literature at the Prešov Philosophical Faculty of Košice University from 1959. He became department head in 1968 and faculty dean in 1976. He wrote several articles on the Ukrainian dialects in the Prešov region and Transcarpathia (see Transcarpathian dialects), the local literary language, and Ukrainian-Slovak comparative grammar and Slovak-Ukrainian linguistic relations; a popular booklet (with Yurii Bacha and A. Kovach) on Ukrainians in Czechoslovakia (1967); and a monograph on the post-1918 literary language of the Ukrainians in Transcarpathia and eastern Slovakia (1969).
