Sherehii, Yurii
Sherehii, Yurii [Шерегій, Юрій; Šerehij, Jurij], b 18 January 1907 in Dusyna, Bereg komitat, Transcarpathia, d 25 May 1990 in Bratislava. Theater director, actor, and playwright. He began his theatrical career in the Ruthenian Theater of the Prosvita Society in Uzhhorod (1923–7). In 1934–8 he was founder (with his brother Yevhen Sherehii) and artistic director of the Nova Stsena theater in Khust. He worked with amateur theaters in Bačka, Yugoslavia (1939–40), as administrative director of the Ukrainian Theater in Drohobych (1942–4; see Lviv Oblast Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater), and as stage director in the Prešov Ukrainian National Theater (1945–7 and 1954–6) and the People’s Opera in Košice (1947–54). He wrote numerous dramas, including Chasy mynaiut' (Times Pass, 1938), and taught drama in Bratislava (1963–9).
