Salsky, Volodymyr
Salsky, Volodymyr [Sal’s’kyj], b 28 July 1883 in Ostroh, Volhynia gubernia, d 4 October 1940 in Warsaw. Senior staff officer. A graduate of the Nikolai Military Academy of the General Staff in Saint Petersburg (1912), during the First World War he served in the Russian army as division chief of staff and operations officer on corps and army staffs. In 1917, as a lieutenant colonel, he joined the Army of the Ukrainian National Republic and served as chief of staff at several headquarters. In 1918–19 he was a member of the General Staff and in May 1919 became commander of the Zaporozhian Corps which liberated Kyiv on 30 August. In September 1919 Salsky took command of the UNR Army, but two months later he resigned because of failing health. He served as defense minister of the Government-in-exile of the Ukrainian National Republic in 1920–1 and 1924–40. His highest rank was brigadier general.
