Riznychenko, Volodymyr
Riznychenko, Volodymyr [Різниченко, Володимир; Riznyčenko], b 18 October 1870 in Velentiiv khutir, Nizhyn county, Chernihiv gubernia, d 1 April 1932 in Kyiv. Geologist; full member of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (VUAN) from 1929. After graduating from Kharkiv University (1896), until 1916 he took part in geological expeditions to study the Asian mountain ranges of Tarbagataj, Tien Shan, and Altai. His subsequent scientific work dealt exclusively with Ukraine and included the study of the stratigraphy and tectonics of Right-Bank Ukraine (particularly the Kaniv Hills). He also studied hydrogeological conditions in Volhynia and published extensively in the areas of general, dynamic, and regional geology, hydrogeology, geography, and archeology. In 1930–2 he became director of the VUAN Geological Institute (later the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR). He was also a poet and cartoonist (eg, in Shershen’).
