Pshepiurska-Ovcharenko, Mariia [Пшепюрська-Овчаренко, Марія; Pšepjurs'ka-Ovčarenko, Marija], b 19 June 1909 in Tarnawka, Przeworsk county, Galicia, d 12 January 1998 in Charlston, South Carolina, USA. Slavic philologist and linguist; full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society from 1952 and the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences from 1988. A graduate of Cracow University (M PHIL, 1934) and Prague University (PH D, 1945), she taught Ukrainian in gymnasiums in Peremyshl (1934) and Lviv (1934–9). From 1939 to 1941 she was an associate of the Lviv branch of the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and taught at the Lviv Teachers’ Institute and the Lviv Medical Institute. She taught at Ukrainian displaced persons camps in Bavaria (1945–9). After emigrating to the United States of America (1949) she taught at various colleges and at the Ukrainian Catholic University (Rome). She is the author of a book on the Sian region dialects (1938), a Ukrainian school reader (3 edns, 1955, 1959, 1962), the booklet Gogol (Hohol) and Osmachka (1969), and articles on Ukrainian language and literature.
