Okunevsky, Yaroslav

Okunevsky, Yaroslav [Окуневський, Ярослав; Okunevs’kyj, Jaroslav], b 5 March 1860 in Radivtsi (Rădăuţi), Bukovyna, d 24 October 1929 in Horodenka, Galicia. Physician and civic leader; brother of Teofil Okunevsky. After graduating in medicine from Vienna University he served as general physician in the Austrian navy. When the Western Ukrainian National Republic was established, he founded and headed the Ukrainian sanitary mission to Vienna. After the First World War he settled in Horodenka and practiced medicine. He contributed articles to many newspapers and almanacs and published an account of his travels as a naval doctor as Lysty z chuzhyny (Letters from Abroad, 2 vols, 1898, 1902).
