Okanenko, Arkadii
Okanenko, Arkadii [Оканенко, Аркадій], b 16 March 1894 in Smila, Kyiv gubernia, d 27 September 1982 in Kyiv. Plant physiologist and biochemist; corresponding member of the Academy of Scoiences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1967. A graduate of the Kyiv Agricultural Institute (1926), he worked in Kyiv at the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Sugar Beets until 1950 (from 1937 as laboratory director) and then became a department head at the Institute of Plant Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. He researched the mechanisms of sugar accumulation and storage in sugar beets (particularly the role of the root system and leaves) and the role of potassium in photosynthesis.
