Mongols

Mongols. A mixture of Asiatic tribes, known also as Tatars, who in the 13th century created an empire extending from China to eastern Europe. They first appeared on the outskirts of Kyivan Rus’ in 1223, and they invaded and conquered it in 1239–41. Then they set up the state of the Golden Horde in the lower Volga region and for over a century exercised hegemony over Ukraine.
