Menchyts, Volodymyr

Menchyts, Volodymyr [Менчиць, Володимир; Menčyc'], b 1837 in Vchoraishe, Skvyra county, Kyiv gubernia, d 16 March 1916 in Kyiv. Civic activist and ethnographer. A student at the Kyiv Theological Academy, he was active in the Saint Petersburg hromada (1860s) and later established bookstores in Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Yelysavethrad. During his life he was an enthusiastic collector of folklore and ethnographic data. Some of his materials were published by Mykhailo Drahomanov in Malorusskie narodnye predaniia i rasskazy (Little Russian Folk Legends and Tales, 1876), but most remain in manuscript at the National Library of Ukraine.
