Martynets, Yosyp
Martynets, Yosyp [Мартинець, Йосип; Martynec', Josyp; Martenetz, José], b 7 February 1903 in Lviv, d 23 February 1989 in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. Basilian priest and Ukrainian Catholic bishop. After moving to Brazil at an early age with his parents, he studied in Rome until his ordination in 1928 and then returned to Brazil to serve with the Basilian monastic order. From 1953 he worked in the Basilian curia in Rome, headed a commission for the publication of the Bible in the Ukrainian language, and was rector of Saint Josaphat's Ukrainian Pontifical College. Martynets was consecrated auxiliary bishop to Cardinal J. Câmara for Eastern rite Catholics in 1958. In 1962 he was named exarch, and in 1971 he was appointed bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic eparchy of Brazil. He retired in 1978.
