Markevych, Oleksander P.

Markevych, Oleksander P. [Маркевич, Олександер; Markevyč], b 19 March 1905 in Ploske, Tarashcha county, Kyiv gubernia, d 23 April 1999 in Kyiv. Zoologist; full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1957 (correspondent from 1948). He graduated from Kyiv Institute of People's Education (1930) and worked in Leningrad (1930–5) before becoming an associate of the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in 1935 and its director in 1948–50. From 1970 he was affiliated with the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Markevych also taught and held several administrative positions at Kyiv University (1935–61), and he organized the Ukrainian Parasitology Society in 1945. His principal research was on parasitology, the zoology of invertebrates, the phylogeny of animals, and the history of zoology. His major publications include Osnovy parazytolohiï (The Principles of Parasitology, 1950) and Filoheniia tvarynnoho svitu (The Phylogeny of the Animal World, 1964).
