Lyzohub, Andrii

Lyzohub, Andrii [Лизогуб, Андрій], b 16 June 1804 in Burkivka, Sosnytsia county, Chernihiv gubernia, d 30 May 1865 in Nice, France. Descendant of the Lyzohub Cossack starshyna family in the Chernihiv region; brother of Illia Lyzohub and Oleksander Lyzohub; father of Dmytro Lyzohub and Fedir Lyzohub. He graduated from Moscow University and worked as a civil servant in 1827–38. He owned a large estate in the Chernihiv region, where his close friend Taras Shevchenko visited him in 1846–7. Lyzohub was a good musician and painter, as well as a supporter of Ukrainian language and literature. He was among the few who corresponded with Shevchenko in exile and who sent him material aid.
