Lazarenko, Yevhen

Lazarenko, Yevhen [Лазаренко, Євген], b 26 December 1912 in Kharkiv, d 1 January 1979 in Kyiv. Geologist and mineralogist; full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences from 1969. He graduated from Kharkiv University (1934) and taught at Voronezh University from 1938. He taught at Lviv University from 1944, became a professor there in 1948, and served as rector from 1951 to 1963. He was head of the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1969–71) and department head at the Institute of the Geochemistry and Physics of Minerals of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (from 1972). Lazarenko initiated the Ukrainian Mineralogical Society and served as its first president (1970) and was vice-president of the All-Union Mineralogical Society (1971). Lazarenko’s main works were devoted to general mineralogy as well as to the mineral resources of Ukraine. He wrote several textbooks on mineralogy and coauthored a mineralogical dictionary, contributing to the development of the Ukrainian-language terminology in this field.
