Latta, Vasyl

Latta, Vasyl (Латта, Василь), b 29 December 1921 in Pčoliné, Humenne district, Czechoslovakia, d 27 June 1965 in Bratislava. Linguist. A graduate of Bratislava University (1947) and Leningrad University (1949), Latta taught at Bratislava University beginning in 1954 and became a professor there in 1962. He prepared a three-volume atlas of Ukrainian dialects in Slovakia (1991) based on his extensive field research on the Ukrainian dialects of Eastern Slovakia, and published several articles on the phonology of these dialects and an important article on the Slovak-Ukrainian linguistic border (1962) (see Slovak-Ukrainian linguistic relations).
