Kotarbiński, Wilhelm
Kotarbiński, Wilhelm [Котарбінський, Вільгельм; Kotarbins'kyi, Vilhelm], b 30 November 1849 in Nieborów, Łowicz county, Warsaw gubernia, d 4 September 1921 in Kyiv. Polish painter who spent much of his creative life in Ukraine; from 1905 full member of the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts. A graduate of the Warsaw Art School (1871), Saint Luke’s Academy in Rome (1875), and the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts (1882), he worked many years in Kyiv and was a founding member of the Society of Kyiv Artists (1893). Collaborating with A. and P. Svedomsky, he painted Saint Volodymyr's Cathedral in Kyiv (1885–96), including such murals as The Last Supper, The Entry into Jerusalem, Ascension, and Judgment of Pilate. He also painted the ceilings of Mykola Tereshchenko’s and Bohdan Khanenko’s residences in Kyiv. Many of his canvases deal with mythological themes and are highly symbolic; eg, Prometheus and Vulcan (1881), Roman Orgy, The Battle of the Centaurs and Amazons, and Sacrifice to Nilus. He also illustrated the Bible.
