Karkhut, Spyridon

Karkhut, Spyridon [Кархут, Спіридон; Karxut], b 30 September 1869 in Novosilka Kostiukova, Borshchiv county, Galicia, d 14 March 1931 in Lviv. Ukrainian Catholic priest, educator, civic leader. He was ordained in 1892 and graduated from Lviv University (PH D 1914). An active member of the Teachers' Hromada, he was a teacher of classical philology at the Academic Gymnasium of Lviv (1906–28) and then professor of Old Church Slavonic at the Greek Catholic Theological Academy in Lviv (1928–31). In 1929–30 he was also the dean of the Faculty of Theology at the academy. Karkhut was the author of Hramatyka ukraïns'koï tserkovno-slov’ians’koï movy (The Grammar of the Ukrainian Church Slavonic Language, 1927).
