Institute of Plant Cultivation of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Ukraine

Institute of Plant Cultivation of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Ukraine (Український науково-дослідний інститут рослинництва, селекції і генетики ім. В. Юрієва; Ukrainskyi naukovo-doslidnyi instytut roslynnytstva, selektsii i henetyky im. V. Iurieva). A scientific research institute in the system of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Ukraine, named in honor of its first director Vasyl Yuriev. Located in Kharkiv, the institute was established in 1956 (under the name Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Plant Cultivation, Selection, and Genetics) by the union of the Kharkiv Selection Station (est 1909) and the Institute of Selection and Genetics the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (est 1946). It was reorganized in 1992 and assumed its present name. The institute consists of 5 departments, 12 laboratories, 3 seed farms, and a research farm and has a total area of some 30,000 ha. The divisions support the following programs: agriculture, agricultural ecology and plant resources, plant protection, seed production, and the economics of agriculture. The laboratories investigate the selection of spiked-grain cultures, the selection of corn, grain, and cereal cultures, genetics, implantation and development, heterosis, physiology and biochemistry, agricultural chemistry, soil microbiology, and grain biochemistry.
