Hermaniuk, Maksym [Германюк, Максим; Hermanjuk; Maxim], b 30 October 1911 in Nove Selo, Zhovkva county, Galicia, d 3 May 1996 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Archbishop and metropolitan of the Ukrainian Catholic church in Canada; full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. He joined the Redemptorist Fathers in 1933 and was ordained in 1938. He studied at Leuven University in Belgium (TH D 1943). In 1948 he came to Canada as supervisor of the Ukrainian Redemptorist Vice-Province of Canada and the United States and taught at the Ukrainian Redemptorist seminary in Waterford, Ontario, where he founded and edited the theological journal Lohos. In 1951 he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Winnipeg and in 1956 archbishop and metropolitan of the Ukrainian Catholic church in Canada. Hermaniuk took part in the Second Vatican Council (1962–5) and was a member of the Presidium of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians, of the Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, and of the Joint Working Group of the World Council of Churches. He retired as metropolitan in 1992. In 1982 he was inducted into the Order of Canada. His publications include La Parabole évangélique (Louvain, 1947), Bibliini opysy svitu v svitli suchasnoï nauky (Biblical Descriptions of Our World in the Light of Contemporary Science, 1950), and Nashi zavdannia (Our Tasks, 1960).
