Fomenko, Mykola
Fomenko, Mykola [Фоменко, Микола], b 25 December 1894 in Rostov-na-Donu, d 8 October 1961 in New York. Composer, pianist, music critic, pedagogue. Fomenko graduated from the Kharkiv Conservatory in 1929 in the class of P. Lutsenko and Semen Bohatyrov. Later he lectured at the conservatory. He gave concerts with Kostiantyn Bohuslavsky. In 1951 he emigrated to the United States of America, settled in New York, and taught at the Ukrainian Music Institute of America. Fomenko’s main works are the operas Marusia Bohuslavka, Hanna (unfinished), and the opera-tale Ivasyk-Telesyk; two symphonies, a symphonic poem, and three suites for orchestra; a piano concerto; compositions for the piano, violin, and cello; art songs to the words of Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko, Pavlo Tychyna, and Yar Slavutych; children's music; and choral music.
