Cherkavsky, Mykhailo
Cherkavsky, Mykhailo [Черкавський, Михайло; Čerkavs'kyj, Myxajlo], b 30 November 1878 in Yakymivtsi, Kremianets county, Volhynia gubernia, d 6 November 1929 in Lviv. Community figure in Volhynia, pedagogue, publicist. In 1918 he became director of the teachers' seminary in Derman, and during the Ukrainian National Republic period in he was appointed by the Central Rada to serve as commissar of education in Volhynia. From 1922 to 1926 he was a member of the Polish Senate and head of the Ukrainian Parliamentary Representation. He was one of the founders of the Ukrainian National Democratic Alliance and served as its vice-president. From 1926 he edited and published in Lutsk the newspapers Hromada (Lutsk) and Ukraïns’ka hromada (Lutsk). He was active in Volhynia’s Ukrainian organizations, particularly those in Kremianets.
