Afanasiev, Vasyl
Afanasiev, Vasyl [Афанасьєв, Василь; Afanas'jev, Vasyl'], b 1 January 1922 in Kopichenskoe, Kustanai oblast, Kazakhstan, d 22 July 2002 in Kyiv. Art historian; graduate of the University of Leningrad in 1949; later on the staff of the Institute of Fine Arts, Folklore, and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Afanasiev's works include Stanovlennia sotsialistychnoho realizmu v ukraïns’komu obrazotvorchomu mystetstvi (The Development of Socialist Realism in Ukrainian Visual Art, 1967); Rysy suchasnosti: Ukraïns’ke obrazotvorche mystetstvo s’ohodni (Outlines of the Present: Ukrainian Visual Art Today, 1973); monographs on the Ukrainian artists Yuliian Bershadsky, Valentyn Znoba, Serhii Hryhoriev, Kyriak Kostandi, Gennadii Ladyzhensky, Mykhailo Lysenko, and Petro Nilus; a book about Odesa artists, Maistry penzlia (Masters of the Brush, 1960); and Tovarystvo pivdenno-rosiis’kykh khudozhnykiv (Society of Southern Russian Artists, 1961).
