Zahrodsky, Oleksander [Загродський, Андрій; Zahrods'kyj], b 10 April 1889 in Zelenkiv, Uman county, Kyiv gubernia, d 4 August 1968 in New York. Senior military officer; brother of Andrii Zahrodsky. After joining the Army of the Ukrainian National Republic in 1918, he commanded a battalion, a regiment, and a division of the Zaporozhian Corps and served as a deputy corps commander (1919). In the First Winter Campaign (1919–20) he was in charge of the Second Volhynian Division, and on his return he served as deputy commander of the UNR Army. He attained the military rank of brigadier general. During his service he participated in about 100 battles and was wounded five times. In the Polish internment camp at Kalisz he was active in the educational and cultural program for Ukrainian soldiers. After the Second World War he emigrated to the United States, where he continued to be active in the Ukrainian community, veterans’ organizations, and the military staff of the Government-in-exile of the Ukrainian National Republic, which promoted him to major general and lieutenant general.
