Samostiina Ukraïna («Самостійна Україна»; Independent Ukraine). A monthly and, beginning in 1973, bimonthly magazine published since 1948 (except for a hiatus in 1970–1) in Chicago (and at various times and for brief periods in Winnipeg, Saint Paul, New York, and Toronto). The organ of the Organization for the Rebirth of Ukraine and, after 1973, of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (Melnykites), it contained articles on politics, history, and culture; analyses of developments in Ukraine; memoirs; and reviews. Its editors have included Bohdan Bociurkiw, S. Kotsiuba, Toma Lapychak (1950–5), Zynovii Knysh (1956–7), Stepan Kuropas (1958–9), V. Shemerdiak (1960–3), M. Panasiuk (1963–8, 1971–2), Denys Kvitkovsky (1973–9), V. Nahirniak (1979–86), Petro Stercho (1986–7), and P. Dorozhynsky (after 1987).
