Mochutkovsky, Yosyp [Мочутковський, Йосип; Močutkovs'kyj, Josyp], b 7 March 1845 in Kherson gubernia, d 5 June 1903 in Pavlovsk near Saint Petersburg. Infectious diseases specialist, neuropathologist, and balneologist. A graduate of Kyiv University (1869), he worked at the Odesa Municipal Hospital (1870–93) and helped found the medical paper Iuzhnorusskaia meditsinskaia gazeta (1892–6) in Odesa. From 1893 he was a consultant and professor of neurology at the Saint Petersburg Clinical Institute for the Upgrading of Physicians. In a self-experiment he showed that relapsing and typhoid fevers are transmitted through the blood by bloodsucking insects (lice).
