Zyla, Wolodymyr
Zyla, Wolodymyr [Жила, Володимир; Žyla, Volodymyr], b 25 June 1919 in Zbarazh, Galicia, d 15 November 2004 in Lubbock, Texas, USA. Emigré literary scholar and community figure; member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. As a postwar refugee he organized the first Ukrainian displaced persons camp in the British zone of Austria near Villach and founded and edited the short-lived paper Ukraïns’ki visti. After emigrating to São Paulo, Brazil, in 1948, he was a coeditor of the weekly Nasha dumka. In 1952 he emigrated to Canada. He graduated from the University of Manitoba (1962) and the Ukrainian Free University (PH D, 1967). From 1963 to 1986 he was a professor of Russian, German, and comparative literature at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He wrote articles and reviews in the fields of Ukrainian literature and comparative literature and onomastics in North American scholarly publications.
