Znosko-Borovsky, Oleksander
Znosko-Borovsky, Oleksander [Зноско-Боровський, Олександер; Znosko-Borovs'kyj], b 27 February 1908 in Kyiv, d 8 March 1983 in Kyiv. Composer and violinist. He graduated (1932) from the Lysenko Music and Drama Institute in the composition class of Lev Revutsky, served as music consultant for feature films at the Ukrainfilm studio in Kyiv (1931–41), and then (1945–63) worked as music editor for the Mystetstvo publishing house. His compositions include the cantata Our Victory (1946) for chorus and orchestra; three symphonies (1958, 1960, and 1967) and other works for orchestra (symphonic poems, overtures, etc.); concertos for violin (1951), cello (1968), French horn (1976), and trombone (1975); chamber music; works for chorus, piano, violin, and trombone; pieces for band; art songs and folk song settings; and music for radio and films. His musicological works include brochures on Andrii Shtoharenko (1946), Modest Mussorgsky (1949), and Aleksandr Borodin (1959), as well as articles in journals.
