Zharsky, Yevhen

Zharsky, Yevhen [Жарський, Євген; Zhars'kyi, Jevhen], b 1834 in Chertizh, now in Zhydachiv raion, Lviv oblast, d 1892 in Lviv. Pedagogue and writer. A teacher of Ukrainian language and literature in Ternopil (from approximately 1865), he wrote two epic poems (Sviatyi vechir [Christmas Eve] and Marusia Bohuslavka [Marusia Bohuslavka, 1862]), literary criticism, and numerous articles published in Ukrainian newspapers and journals in Galicia, including Zoria halytska, Vechernytsi (Lviv), and the monthly Meta. He also translated works by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Heinrich Heine into Ukrainian, and in 1877 he published the collection Poeziï (Poems). In the 1880s he moved to Lviv, where he joined the Russophiles.
