Zabolotny, Volodymyr

Zabolotny, Volodymyr [Заболотний, Володимир; Zabolotnyj], b 13 August 1898 in Karen, Pereiaslav county, Poltava gubernia, d 3 August 1962 in Kyiv. Architect; president of the Academy of Construction and Architecture of the Ukrainian SSR (1945–56) and full member of the USSR Academy of Construction and Architecture from 1950. After graduating from the Kyiv State Art Institute in 1927, he joined its faculty and in 1940 became a professor. He supervised the design and construction of over 70 blocks in interwar Kyiv and many urban housing developments and workers’ settlements in the Donets Basin and Kryvyi Rih region (1929–33), and designed the Palace of Culture at the Dzerzhinsky Metallurgical Plant in Dniprodzerzhynsk (1932) and the Building of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR in Kyiv (1936–9). He wrote studies on Ukrainian architecture, including a book on the first 30 years of Soviet architecture in Ukraine (1948). A booklet about him by L. Hrachova was published in Kyiv in 1967.
