Yaryzhka alphabet

Yaryzhka alphabet. The derogatory name for the Russian alphabet in which, according to the Ems Ukase (1876), all Ukrainian-language publications in the Russian Empire had to appear. This regulation remained in effect until 1905. The yaryzhka is named after yery, the name of the Russian letter ы. Its orthography was phonetic, with the exception of the etymological jer (ъ) at the end of words after a consonant.
