Wójcik, Zbigniew

Wójcik, Zbigniew, b 29 October 1922 in Warsaw, d 22 March 2014 in Warsaw. Polish historian. A graduate of Warsaw University (Ph D, 1947), he served in Warsaw on the chief directorate of the state archives (1950–9), directed the Office of Scientific Works (1953–9), and taught at the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences (from 1959, as professor from 1971) and became chairman of its Scholarly Council (1981). He wrote books in Polish on the 1667 Treaty of Andrusovo and its origin (1959), the Cossacks in the Polish Commonwealth (1960; 3rd edn 1968), the 16th- to 18th-century Polish diplomatic service (1966), Polish-Russian relations in 1667–72 (1968), the history of Russia from 1533 to 1801 (1971), 16th- to 17th-century world history (1973), Polish foreign policy vis-à-vis Turkey and Russia in 1674–9 (1976), King Jan III Sobieski (1983), King Jan II Casimir Vasa (1997), and Józef Piłsudski (1999). He also edited, with an introduction, a Polish edition of Erich Lassota von Steblau and Guillaume Le Vasseur de Beauplan’s descriptions of Ukraine (1972).
