Werewolf
Werewolf (vovkulaka). A mythological creature who changes from a man into a wolf at night to eat animals, humans, or corpses and returns to human form at sunrise. According to folk beliefs, some persons whose mothers had unexpectedly seen a wolf, had eaten meat from an animal killed by a wolf, or had been impregnated during a religious ban on sexual activity, were born werewolves. Others were changed into werewolves by a witch's or sorcerer's spells. Ukrainian beliefs about werewolves were similar to those of other European peoples.
