Voznesensk [Вознесенськ; Voznesens'k]. Map: Boh River and a raion center in Mykolaiv oblast. The city was founded by a decree of Catherine II in 1795 at the site of a Cossack winter settlement called Sokoly. Between 1795 and 1797 it was the administrative center of the Voznesensk vicegerency. During the 19th century Voznesensk developed into an important manufacturing and trading center of New Russia gubernia. It held three fairs a year and traded in lumber and salt. It was granted city status in 1938. Today it is an industrial center and railway junction. It is the home of a leather-manufacturing consortium, a conveyor-belt plant, a winery, and sewing, musical-instruments, canning, cheese, and meat-processing factories.
