Votchal, Yevhen
Votchal, Yevhen [Вотчаль, Євген; Votčal, Jevhen], b 26 October 1864 in Borzna, Chernihiv gubernia, d 1 April 1937 in Kyiv. Plant physiologist; full member of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences from 1921. A graduate of Kazan University (1889), he was a professor at the Kyiv Polytechnical Institute (1898–1932) and one of the organizers of the Scientific Institute of Selection (1922, later the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Sugar Beets). Votchal studied transpiration in agricultural plants and the physiological principles underlying selection, and contributed to the development of the Soviet turpentine industry. He established the Ukrainian school of plant physiology.
