Volynets, Stepan

Volynets, Stepan [Волинець, Степан; Volynec'], b 22 January 1895 in Lviv, d 10 April 1969 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Journalist and civic and political leader. During the revolutionary period he fought in the ranks of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen and in the Army of the Ukrainian National Republic. In the 1920s he completed his education at the Lviv (Underground) Ukrainian University and Vienna University. He held high posts in the Communist Party of Western Ukraine. In 1928–30 he was a deputy to the Polish Sejm and secretary of its Sel-Rob caucus. His political sympathies later shifted, and from 1933 he was active in the Front of National Unity and its publications Bat’kivshchyna (see Batkivshchyna), Ukraïns’ki visty, and Peremoha. During the Second World War he directed the Institute of Public Education under the Ukrainian Central Committee and sat on the Military Board of the Division Galizien. After leaving Ukraine in 1944, he edited the paper Ukraïns’ke slovo in Blomberg, Germany. In 1949 he settled in Canada, and in 1957 he was appointed editor of Ukraïns’kyi holos. He wrote Peredvisnyky i tvortsi lystopadovoho zryvu (The Precursors and Creators of the November Uprising, 1965) about the November Uprising in Lviv, 1918.
