Vistnyk Soiuza vyzvolennia Ukraïny [«Вістник Союза визволення України»; Herald of the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine]. An organ of the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine, published in Vienna semimonthly and then weekly from October 1914 to November 1918 (a total of 226 issues); in 1918 it was titled Vistnyk polityky, literatury i zhyttia. The paper propagated Ukrainian independence, the interests of which, it argued, would be served by the defeat of the Russian Empire by the Central Powers. It remains an excellent source of information about political developments in Western Ukraine and Russian-ruled Ukraine during the First World War and after the February Revolution of 1917. Vistnyk reported extensively on Ukrainian life in German and Austrian prisoner of war camps and in Central Europe, and on foreign attitudes toward the Ukrainian question. It also published prose, poetry, literary criticism, and art criticism. The editors were Volodymyr Doroshenko, Mykhailo Vozniak, and Andrii Zhuk.
