Vashchenko, Hryhorii
Vashchenko, Hryhorii [Ващенко, Григорій; Vaščenko, Hryhorij], b 5 May 1878 in Bohdanivka, Pryluky county, Poltava gubernia, d 4 May 1967 in Munich, West Germany. Pedagogue. A graduate of Moscow Theological Academy (1903), he taught at various schools in Ukraine and Russia until 1918, when he started lecturing at the teachers' institute in Poltava. He was purged from the Poltava Institute of People's Education in 1933, and he obtained a post at the Stalingrad Pedagogical Institute in 1936. After the Second World War he settled in Munich, where he lectured (from 1945) at the Ukrainian Free University and the Theological Academy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. In 1950 he became the rector of the latter institution. Vashchenko wrote several short stories and a novel, Do gruntu (To the Foundation, 1912), as well as pedagogical works, including Zahal'ni metody navchannia (General Methods of Teaching, 2 vols, 1949).
