Uman regiment

Uman regiment. An administrative territory and military formation in Right-Bank Ukraine (see Regimental system) established in 1648 at the outbreak of the Cossack-Polish War. The regimental center, Uman, was well fortified and withstood a number of sieges by the Poles, including a major attack in 1653. The regiment was split during the 1670s as a result of factional fighting between its colonel, Mykhailo Khanenko, and Hetman Petro Doroshenko and was disbanded in 1686. The regiment was revived under Hetman Ivan Mazepa in 1704 and dissolved in 1712.
