Ukrainskaia zhizn’

Ukrainskaia zhizn’ [«Украинская жизнь»; Ukrainian Life]. A Russian-language monthly journal published in Moscow in 1912–17 to inform the non-Ukrainian public in the Russian Empire about the Ukrainian question and the Ukrainian national movement, and to raise the level of Ukrainian national consciousness among Russified Ukrainians. It contained articles on the national question in Russia; chronicles of current events in Ukraine; reviews of articles in Russian, Polish, and other newspapers on Ukrainian topics; reports from Russian-ruled and Western Ukraine; polemics with the militant Russian nationalist and chauvinist press; critical articles on political, historical, cultural, and literary subjects; and book reviews. Although the formal editor and publisher was Ya. Sheremetsinsky, the real editors were Symon Petliura and Oleksander Salikovsky. Contributors included prominent Ukrainian and Russian figures.
