Ukrainian Sociological Institute [Український соціологічний інститут; Ukrainskyi sotsiolohichnyi instytut]. An émigré institution founded in 1919 in Vienna by Mykhailo Hrushevsky with the participation of other members of the Ukrainian Party of Socialist Revolutionaries. In 1920–1 the institute organized public lectures on topics ranging from sociology to the history of the Ukrainian revolution and published 10 works, among them Pavlo Khrystiuk’s classic collection of materials on the history of the Ukrainian struggle for independence (1917–20) (4 vols, 1921–2), Mykhailo Lozynsky’s book on Galicia in 1918–20 (1922), Volodymyr Starosolsky’s Teoriia natsiï (Theory of Nation, 1921), and a book on Mykhailo Drahomanov and the Geneva socialist circle (1922) edited by Hrushevsky. The institute ceased to exist when Hrushevsky and Khrystiuk returned to Ukraine in 1924.
