Ukrainian Canadian Archives and Museum of Alberta

Ukrainian Canadian Archives and Museum of Alberta (Українсько-канадський архів-музей Альберти; Ukrainsko-kanadskyi arkhiv-muzei Alberty, or UCAMA). The museum, located in Edmonton and based on the collections of S. and H. Yopyk, was founded on 31 October 1972 and officially opened on 17 October 1974. Its collection reflects the contribution of Ukrainian pioneers to the development of Canada and includes much material about Ukraine. The library contains more than 15,000 volumes and several archival collections, including those of Michael Luchkovich. UCAMA also houses approximately 5000 photographs, the majority showing Ukrainian life in Alberta (with a significant portion from the pre-Second World War period) as well as photographs and documents pertaining to the Ukrainian Canadian Servicemen's Association and the Royal Canadian Legion, Norwood Branch 178 in Edmonton. UCAMA has held over 50 public exhibits including works by artists, such as Peter Shostak and Jacques Hnizdovsky. H. Yopyk was president of UCAMA until his retirement in 1988; he was followed by M. Kalinowsky (1988–90), W. Chmiliar (1990–5), and Kh. Kohut (after 1996). In March 2003 UCAMA purchased a new and substantially larger building. The history of the museum is presented in a book by H. Yopyk (1982 in Ukrainian, 1987 in English translation) as well as in an article by O. Makar in Zakhidn'okanads'kyi zbirnyk 3 (1999).
