Ternovsky, Pylyp
Ternovsky, Pylyp [Терновський, Пилип; Ternovs'kyj], b 11 August 1838 in Moscow, d 23 May 1884 in Kyiv. Church historian; brother of Serhii Ternovsky. He graduated from the Moscow Theological Seminary (1862) and then taught the history of ‘Rus'’ at the Kyiv Theological Academy and general church history at Kyiv University (from 1869), and contributed to Kievskaia starina, Trudy Kievskoi dukhovnoi akademii, and Novoe vremia. He was dismissed in 1883 for ‘not moving in accordance with the spirit of Orthodoxy’ and for having ‘a tendency towards the opinions of Protestant historians.’ A specialist in Byzantine church history and the history of the Ukrainian church, he wrote monographs on sermonizing in ‘South Russia’ in the 16th and 17th centuries (1869) and on the history of Kyiv eparchy in the 18th century (1879), as well as articles on Metropolitan Stefan Yavorsky and his writings, the participation of ancient Russian archpriests in social issues, the archpriest of Kyiv’s Saint Sophia Cathedral, Ivan Levanda (with Stepan Golubev), Metropolitan Petro Mohyla, the lifestyle of Little Russian monks in the late 18th century, and Serapion of Vladimir.
