Terletsky, Omelian
Terletsky, Omelian [Терлецький, Омелян; Terlec'kyj, Omeljan], b 2 December 1873 in Kramarivka, Jarosław county, Galicia, d 13 February 1958 in Lviv. Pedagogue and historian; full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society from 1921; brother of Markiian Terletsky. He taught in gymnasiums in Ternopil and Chortkiv and at the Academic Gymnasium in Lviv. In conjunction with the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine he worked among Ukrainians who had been captured by the Central Powers and were being held in the internment camps in Germany. He was a long-standing member of the executive of the Ridna Shkola society (twice its head, 1923–4 and 1926–8), a member of the Lviv branch of the Prosvita society, and a member of the Teachers' Hromada in Lviv (acting head in 1923–4 and 1926–8). After the Second World War Terletsky worked at the Institute of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and at Lviv University. He wrote works which were published in Zapysky naukovoho tovarystva im. Shevchenka and various monographs, including Politychni podiï na Halyts'kii Rusi v 1340 (Political Events of 1340 in Galician Rus’, 1896), Kozaky na Bilii Rusi 1654–56 (The Cossacks in Belarus, 1654–56, 1897), Istoriia Ukraïns'koï hromady v Rashtati 1915–18 (History of the Ukrainian Community in Rastatt, 1915–18, 1919), Istoriia Ukraïns'koï derzhavnosty (History of Ukrainian Statehood, 2 vols, 1923–4), Ukraïna zaborolom kul'tury i tsyvilizatsiï pered stepovykamy (Ukraine as the Bastion of Culture and Civilization against the Peoples of the Steppe, 1930), and Het'mans'ka Ukraïna i Zaporizhs'ka Sich (The Hetman [State of] Ukraine and the Zaporozhian Sich, 1935).
